Halfway down the Pacific coast of Mexico lie the states of Colima and Jalisco. They comprise a region of lush mountains, dry coastal forests, and mangroves--one of the finest birding areas in all of Mexico. The tiny state of Colima, embracing only a little more than 2000 square miles, provides the focus for much of our lowland birding; neighboring Jalisco is our destination for highland habitats.
Of the approximately 80 species of birds endemic to Mexico, over 30 are possible on our route. The thorn forest, humid evergreen canyons, and mountain pine-oak and cloud forests we'll visit should produce a total list of nearly 300 species, with possible highlights including Collared Forest-Falcon, Banded Quail, Lilac-crowned Parrot, Mexican Parrotlet, Amethyst-throated Hummingbird, Russet-crowned Motmot, White-throated Magpie-Jay, Happy Wren, Blue Mockingbird, Gray Silky-flycatcher, Chestnut-sided Shrike-Vireo, Red Warbler, Orange-breasted Bunting, Collared Towhee, and Black-chested Sparrow. Among the rarities and little-known species we'll seek are Long-tailed Wood-Partridge, Lesser Ground-Cuckoo, White-throated and Flammulated flycatchers, Dwarf and Slaty vireos, Red-breasted Chat, and Rosy Thrush-Tanager. Clearly, Colima and Jalisco have much to offer!
