January 2014 e-mailing
Happy New Year, fellow birders! This month marks the beginning of our 30th year of Field Guides tours! We can hardly believe it, and we're excited about our upcoming 2014 tour schedule and look forward to seeing you in the field. Some tours are full, others are filling. Are you perhaps interested in Alaska, Hawaii, Cambodia, Thailand, Greece, Sacha (Ecuador), or Honduras this year? There's still space on our second Alaska tour and Hawaii, one space each on Greece, Thailand II, and Cambodia, two on Sacha II, and we need just one more to make Honduras an official "go" with Jesse Fagan, our FG Central America expert. See our February-July open spaces below, and enjoy our January Recent Photos gallery (including Brazil, Peru, Chile, Australia, Madagascar, South Africa, and Alaska, with samples at left). Oh, and there are cool new triplists linked below. All the best for the New Year!
The two last spaces in Roosevelt's canoe...
Rio RooseveltThe word is out: Bret's guiding a special 100th anniversary tour in the footsteps of Teddy Roosevelt and Candido Rondon in a wilderness area packed with newly described species. Dates are April 11-24 (yes, this April) and there are two spaces still open. If you're interested in joining the tour you have till January 20 to put your name in the hat for a drawing to follow in Teddy's wake; we'll send confirmation and an invoice immediately on January 21. Read the full details on our Brazil's Rio Roosevelt: Birding the River of Doubt page, or contact Peggy Watson at our office to add your name to the list. It's going to be an amazing trip, and we're guessing Teddy himself would join us if he could -- we know his spirit will be right there!

Our Peru tours: experienced guides galore
Peru guidesIs there some great experience on the Field Guides Peru team? Well, let's see...Dan Lane's a co-author of the field guide you'll be using (Birds of Peru) and has been going to Peru on expeditions and tours since the 1990s; Jesse Fagan's been based in Peru for the past couple of years and is almost a limeño; Richard Webster's been guiding our Northern Peru: Endemics Galore tour since 1997 (not to mention various other Peru itineraries); and Pepe Rojas is moving back with his wife, Abby, from Northern California to his native Peru (where he has guided birders for many years and is now a keystone in our country program). They're heading afield in Peru again this year, and these tours still have space available:
Machu Picchu & Abra Malaga I: Jul 4-13 with Dan Lane
Mountains of Manu, Peru: Jul 12-27 with Dan Lane
Peru's Magnetic North: Spatuletails, Owlet Lodge & More: Jul 31-Aug 11 with Dan Lane & Dave Stejskal
Peruvian Rainforests of the Tambopata: Oct 4-17 with Pepe Rojas
Northern Peru: Endemics Galore: Nov 2-22 with Richard Webster & Pepe Rojas
Holiday in Peru: Iquitos: Dec 20-31 with Pepe Rojas & Dan Lane

World Birding Rally: 1st prize for the team!
We noted in our December e-mailing that guides Dan Lane and Jesse Fagan, together with Peruvian colleague Fernando Angulo, were competing as Team Field Guides in Peru's World Birding Rally. And we're delighted to report that they captured first prize with 457 species! It was a real squeaker, with two other talented teams coming in tied for a very close second place. Besides all the birds and glory, or course, they were also hoping to raise some funds for a conservation project supporting the Marvelous Spatuletail, and thanks to some great contributions, they did, to the tune of almost $1700. Jesse and Dan report that it was a lot of fun and that they enjoyed not only the great competition but the wonderful camaraderie and spirit of the various teams. Read Jesse's post and see pics of the team on our news page.
