January 2015 e-mailing
Happy New Year, and here's raising a toast to you for a wonderful 2015! If you're in the winter deepfreeze and planning your escape, and we have numerous options below--even raising a glass on tour yourself with guides Marcelo Padua and John Coons on their upcoming Birds & Wines of Chile and Argentina tour Feb 14-28 (3 spaces left). Check out fresh tour images in our January Recent Photos gallery (samples at left), our added Guyana departure, plus cool bird news, fresh triplists and itineraries, and a listing of Jan-Jun tours still open. Good birding!
March Guyana II added with Dave Stejskal
Our original tour is fully booked, so we've added a second departure of our Guyana: Wilderness Paradise tour for Mar 12-23 with Dave Stejskal. The numerous specialties of this rich wilderness destination on the NE coast of S America include Rufous Crab-Hawk, Blood-colored Woodpecker, Capuchinbird, Gray-winged Trumpeter, the amazing Guianan Cock-of-the-rock, and more. Harpy Eagle is also a good possibility, and there's even a chance for White-winged Potoo and Rufous-winged Ground-Cuckoo. Contact us to hold a space with Dave.

Tours with single spaces through June
If you are a single traveler, there is one space still open on each of the following 5 tours between now and July:

--Terry & Karen McEneaney's Ireland in Spring: Birds, Traditional Music & Pubs (May 7-17) melds the best of, well, the tour name covers all three of the great combo highlights(!);
--Maine: Birding Downeast (May 23-31 with Eric Hynes) mixes beautiful landscapes with great New England birding;Rio Roosevelt
--
Brazil's Rio Roosevelt (May 31-Jun 13) gets us into a fantastic wilderness area (Santa Rita rapids by participant Steve Miller at right) under the expert guidance of Bret Whitney (see Bret's video-filled 2014 triplist--very cool!);
--Alta Floresta & the Northern Pantanal (Jun 13-29 with Marcelo Padua) joins safari-like birding in the Pantanal with the Cristalino rainforest experience.
2016 guide schedules are up on our website...

Good Panama airfares?
If you're interested in a getaway to Panama in the next 6 weeks or so, note that we've been seeing some good airfares recently while booking for other clients, with examples of prices less than $500 round trip from LA to Panama City and under $400 from Miami. With the airlines, who knows, of course, if this will last! We have a few spaces on these tours:
Panama's Canopy Camp: Jan 24-Feb 1 with John Coons
Panama's Canopy Tower III: Feb 21-27 with Chris Benesh
Cool bird news: Avian evolution insights
For some fascinating new insights into relationships among some orders and families of birds formerly thought not to be close cousins, check out this fascinating article in The Guardian (or a different article in Nature) on a multi-year project to map out evolutionary ties among birds.
