CLOUDFORESTS OF ECUADOR: All the Best of the Wild Northwest

The Umachaca River just 20 meters from Maquipucuna Lodge...great birding awaits! (Photo by guide Willy Perez)
We'll be based at just two great lodges on Ecuador's west slope to experience a diversity of great birds and have the opportunity for a highlight mammal, Spectacled Bear.

This new itinerary with Willy Perez will explore the lush habitats of northwestern Ecuador in search of a fantastic array of birds and wildlife, including a variety of antpittas, the amazing Long-wattled Umbrellabird, and with even a good chance at seeing Spectacled Bear.

Our first base for birding will be Maquipucuna Lodge, located in pristine cloud forest only 80 kms from Quito. Here we'll spend two days searching for such unusual species as Scaled Fruiteater, Esmeraldas Antbird, Crested Guan, Lanceolated Monklet and, at this season, also Spectacled Bear.

We'll then head to Sachatamia Lodge, our base for four full days. We'll no doubt be mesmerized by the lodge's active tanager and hummingbird feeders, but we'll also explore nearby locations for a variety of antpittas, Long-watlled Umbrellabird, Andean Cock-of-the-rock, and many birds endemic to the Choco region of northwestern Ecuador.
