With the existence of lodges such as Sacha in Ecuador's Amazonian rainforest, the treasure chest of the single richest biome on Earth has never been so accessible. And since its inauguration, Sacha has become known as one of the most comfortable lodges in upper Amazonia, encompassing a wide variety of rich Amazonian habitats, including Yasuni National Park.
This tour offers a week-long stay at a single site, affording the time necessary to probe the challenges of Amazonian forest birding while providing excellent chances to encounter some genuine rarities of considerable allure--Scarlet-shouldered Parrotlet, Lanceolated Monklet, Collared Puffbird, Rufous-headed Woodpecker, Short-billed Leaftosser, Dot-backed Antbird, Chestnut-belted Gnateater, and Orange-crested Manakin to name a few. A network of trails from the lodge offers easy access to a wonderful expanse of seasonally flooded forest (varzea) and to some of the finest canopy walkways and platforms we have encountered, opening a whole new dimension to formerly grounded birders and often close views of numerous species from Paradise Tanagers and Cream-colored Woodpeckers to Ivory-billed Aracaris and White-browed Purpletufts. We'll visit two fabulous parrot licks, which attract up to eight species of psittacids. And we'll have easy access to virtually a full range of river-created habitats.
