Field Guides Birding Tours
The great sunset in the Pantanal captured by participant Peter Lowen.

Just a few birding tours go to three of the greatest habitats in South America, the Amazon forest, Cerrado and the Pantanal. This tour is an amazing example of how biodiverse the continent is and how we don't need to go too far to see many different habitats and wildlife. This year our tour started in the Amazon part, flying from Cuiabá, capital of the state of Mato Grosso, to the town of Alta Floresta, where the fantastic Cristalino Jungle Lodge (CJL) is located. We were there for 6 days and it was just incredible.

One of the most remarkable features about CJL is the two canopy towers. From both towers, we saw amazing birds like White-bellied Parrot, White-browed Purpletuft, Curl-crested, Red-necked, Lettered and Black-necked aracaris, Spix's Guan, Paradise, Opal-rumped, Dotted and Bay-headed tanagers, White-browed Hawk, both gorgeous Pompadour and Spangled cotingas, Black-girdled Barbet, many macaws like Scarlet, Red-and-green, Blue-and-yellow and Chestnut-fronted, both Kawall's and Mealy parrots, Cryptic Forest-falcon and more. The trails were also quite productive, with nice mixed-species flocks with White-eyed Stipplethroat, White-winged Shrike-tanager, Rufous-rumped Foliage-gleaner and Curve-billed Scythebill. Besides those, Rufous-necked Puffbird was seen twice, Plain-throated Antwren, and we had three nice encounters with Dark-winged Trumpeter.

Thanks to the local guides, the bathing stations were also fantastic this year, with Band-tailed, White-crowned and Snow-capped manakins, the always wanted Black-spotted Bare-eye and Bare-eyed Antbird, Rufous-rumped Foliage-gleaner, Spot-backed Antbird and a few other species seen well. Along the always great Cristalino river, we saw Red-fan Parrot, Zig-zag Heron, Hoatzin, Razor-billed Curassow and a great view of an adult Brazilian Tapir swimming along the river.

After those great days we flew to Chapada dos Guimarães to bird in the Cerrado habitat, where we had two very good days and saw birds like White-rumped Tanager, Collared Crescent-chest, Chapada and Suiriri flycatchers, Curl-crested Jay, Checkered Woodpecker, Dot-eared Coquette, Large-billed Antwren, nice male Fiery-capped Manakin and White-wedged Piculet. On the second morning, we went to a place called Jamacá das Araras where a couple of birders are feeding some very interesting birds like Amazonian Motmot, Pale-crested Woodpecker and both Tataupa and Undulated tinamous and we had some unforgettable moments with those birds. Besides that, along the trail close to their house, we also spotted a pair of Western Fire-eyes. In one of the most celebrated moments on the tour, an adult Pavonine Cuckoo came in and landed eye level, 10 feet away from us for about 5 minutes. That was another unforgettable moment at Jamacá das Araras.

After those great exciting moments we drove throughout Cuiabá to the Pantanal, the third different habitat and one of the best places for birding in the world. The first afternoon in the Pantanal, at Piuval lodge was just unbelievable. We saw about 75 species in about 3 hours birding at the lodge grounds, including Hyacinth Macaw, Great Rufous Woodcreeper, Rufous Cacholote, hundreds of Nacunda Nighthawk, Southern Screamer, Maguari Stork and Long-tailed Ground-dove.

The other places nearby were also great, with many Jaguars, Subtropical Doradito, Chotoy Spinetail, Scarlet-headed Blackbird, Pale-bellied Tyrant-Manakin, Plain Tyrannulet, Little Cuckoo, Mato Grosso Antbird, Red-billed Scythebill and another Jaguar walking along the Transpantaneira road on the way back.

Thanks for the great tour, guys!
