Bolivia is a hidden gem, seldom visited by most birders and yet boasting more than 1,300 species--more than 40 percent of South America's bird diversity--across a stunning array of landscapes. We feature two Field Guides birding tours to Bolivia, one focused primarily on the highlands and ascending from about 1,000 feet elevation to above 12,000 feet, and the other visiting several lodges in the lowlands. Bolivia Overview & Highlights
On our Bolivia’s Avian Riches tour, we journey from the savannas and wetlands near Santa Cruz, where Greater Rhea and Red-legged Seriema roam, to the dramatic red sandstone cliffs of Refugio Los Volcanes, alive with flocks of parrots and macaws. We then ascend higher into the Andes for breathtaking views and specialties like Andean Condor, the endemic Red-fronted Macaw, and the rare Titicaca Grebe on Lake Titicaca. On the humid slopes of the Andes, we explore lush cloud forests and Polylepis woodlands for dazzling hummingbirds (such as Black-hooded Sunbeam), Hooded Mountain-Toucan, and mixed flocks of montane tanagers. In the arid intermontane valleys, we seek out such subtle and gaudy gems as Bolivian Earthcreeper and Cream-backed Woodpecker.
Our Bolivia's Lowland Lodges itinerary focuses on the rich lowlands of Bolivia's northwest with chances for such prizes as Blue-throated Macaw, Masked Antpitta, Chaco Eagle, and several hundred additional species of Amazonian and Andean foothill birds. We visit the Riberalta and Trinidad areas, then wrap up at two great birding lodges, Barba Azul and Sadiri.
Discover Bolivia with us: its birding surprises include recently discovered (and a few yet-to-be-described) species and regional endemics rarely seen elsewhere, all amid good accommodations and welcoming logistics. With every day offering new habitats and avian treasures, birding in Bolivia is a vibrant adventure through one of the continent's most diverse and least-explored countries.
