February 1-15, 2025 with Marcelo Padua

The Andes is the longest mountain range on earth and it is at the heart of this tour, as we explore both the East and West slopes, and never venture too far from the foothills. We started our tour in Santiago, the capital of Chile that is nestled between the Western slope of the Andes and the pre-cordillera mountain range. The area is rich with endemics, and we found many of them, such as Chilean Mockingbird, Austral Blackbirds, Dusky-tailed Canastero, Crag Chilia and Moustached Turca. We also ventured up the Andes to find Andean Condors, Gray-breasted Seedsnipe, and even the scarce Diademed Sandpiper-plover.
On the wine front, we enjoyed the famous Carmenere wines of Chile, but also grapes such as Carignan, which do very well in the dry climate of Chile. We also enjoyed some excellent Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, all of it paired with an abundance of sea food that is unparalled, and some wonderful beef.

We then made our way across the Andes into Argentina on a day that is forever imprinted in our brains. This is one of the most scenic drives on earth, and along the way we picked up Andean Goose, Black-fronted Ground-tyrants, Scale-throated Earthcreeper and several others that were found at the foot of Aconcagua Mountain, the tallest mountain in the world outside of the Himalayans. The change once we made our way to the Eastern slope was abrupt, with grilled steak dominating the menus, Malbec wine taking the center stage, and birds such as Hooded Siskins, Chiguanco Thrush, Grayish Baywing and Shiny Cowbirds dominating the checklist.
The following days were spent savoring the wines of Mendoza and sampling Malbecs, Bonarda, Torrontes and many others, while eating more beef than it seemed humanly possible, and enjoying fantastic birds like Crested Gallito, Patagonian Earthcreeper, Ticking Doradito, Chilean Flamingos, Scimitar-billed Woodcreeper, Red-tailed Comet, and every shape and size of Canastero imaginable.

Our tour ended with a couple of fabulous days along the coast of Chile, with Inca Terns, Chilean Seaside Cinclodes, Blackish Oystercatchers, Whimbrels and several others right outside of our bedroom windows. We also explored the mouth of the Maipo River and some nearby areas, picking up some iconic birds such as Des Murs’s Wiretail, Ticking Doradito, Rufous-tailed Plantcutter, and Fire-eyed Diucon.
We finished our tour with an unforgettable lunch in the Casablanca Valley, complete with the area's Sauvignon Blanc, sparkling wines and Pinot Noir wines. I loved doing this tour once again, and I look forward to repeating it next year, and I hope we meet again in the future to enjoy some great birds, drink some fabulous wine and share incredible meals.
