Trip Report — Brazil: Atlantic Forest Getaway II (Private) 2024

What a wonderful group to travel with! Photo by guide Marcelo Padua.

I have to admit that when I was told by Field Guides that we had a private group that wanted to do a shorter version of our advertised tour I was a bit apprehensive but any worries I had immediately went away when I met everyone.

This is one of my favorite tours for a number of reasons, including the fact that we spend all the nights in a single place, the variety of gorgeous birds that are endemic to the Atlantic Forest, the aesthetics of the habitat and the temperatures which are very pleasant for the most part, but having a group that consisted of just friends who love to see birds and have a good time made this tour extra special.

Our tour was a bit shorter than the usual tour but we still managed to pack in almost as many birds as on our advertised tour. We enjoyed spectacular views of birds such as the the colorful Brassy-breasted Tanagers and Spot-billed Toucanets, a myriad of fascinating antbirds that included the very elegant Large-tailed Antshrike, and some true skulkers like Ash-throated Crake.

Our wonderful meals together at Mariza made us feel at home and we enjoyed some outstanding meals in the field as well, making this a tour I will never forget.

I loved sharing some Brazilian birds with each of you and I hope we get to do it again some day.

This Diademed Tanager was one of the many species we found in the upper reaches of Pico Caledonia. Photo by guide Marcelo Padua.
