Our adventure through Southern Argentina blends an extraordinary diversity of landscapes, habitats, and birds with comfortable accommodation and delicious food.
The lush grasslands of the Argentine Pampas support a diverse avifauna including Greater Rhea, South American Painted-Snipe, Hudson's Canastero, Bay-capped Wren-Spinetail, and Scarlet-headed Blackbird, among many others. To the south, in fabled Patagonia, the arid monte scrub of Rio Negro gives us a chance of uncovering special birds like the little-known Hudson's Black-Tyrant, the endemic Cinnamon Warbling-Finch, and the endemic Sandy Gallito. Deeper in coastal Patagonia, on the famed Valdez Peninsula, big pinniped colonies attract visitors like scavenging Snowy Sheathbills, skuas, and giant-petrels, and the seas shelter vital calving areas for the rare Southern Right Whale. At Punta Tombo the pebbly beaches glisten with thousands of Magellanic Penguins, their braying and flipper-waving display producing a semaphoric symphony at one of the largest such gatherings in the world. In the far south at Ushuaia, we'll seek those Tierra del Fuego specialties like the enormous Magellanic Woodpecker, Yellow-bridled Finch, and Austral Pygmy-Owl amidst the dense Southern Beech forests and lofty Andean peaks. An exciting, scenic boat trip on the Beagle Channel should yield numerous seabirds, nesting cormorants, gulls and terns, Kelp Geese, and Black-browed Albatrosses.
We'll also visit the picturesque town of El Calafate. Here, abutting the vast Patagonian steppe, Los Glaciares National Park plays home to one of the largest glaciers in the world and some of the most spectacular scenery in all of South America. Specialties like the White-throated Treerunner, Magellanic Tapaculo, and the unique Magellanic Plover (placed in its own family) number among our quarry.
