Arizona Overview & Highlights

Field Guides birding tours to the Grand Canyon State highlight the famed "Sky Islands" of Southeast Arizona--mountain ranges such as the Santa Rita, Huachuca, and Chiricahua where lush canyons and pine forests rise from the desert floor--as well as the magnificent Grand Canyon itself.

At hotspots like Madera Canyon, Cave Creek Canyon, and Box Canyon, you'll encounter dazzling hummingbirds, Elegant Trogon, Montezuma Quail, Red-faced Warbler, and the rare Five-striped Sparrow, alongside owls, nightjars, and Painted Redstart.

Our spring and summer (in the delightful monsoon season) Southeast Arizona tours also explore riparian stretches such as those along the San Pedro and Santa Cruz rivers, where specialties like Rose-throated Becard and a host of flycatchers and sparrows await.

Nightbirding is a highlight in particular on our spring tours (the birds are less vocal in summer), with chances to see up to eleven owl species and several nightjars, including the elusive Flammulated Owl and tiny Elf Owl; and we even have a shorter Arizona Nightbirds & More trip that can get you a big dose of Southeast Arizona birding (nighttime and daytime!) in just a few days.

Field Guides' Northern Arizona tours bring you to the breathtaking Grand Canyon, Oak Creek Canyon, and the San Francisco Peaks, where we'll seek the majestic California Condor, Lewis's Woodpecker, Williamson's Sapsucker, and Rocky Mountain specialties in stunning red rock and pine forest settings.

Our short December tour to the southern reaches of the state seeks a multitude of wintering finches, bugling Sandhill Cranes, raptors, winter irruptives including Lawrence's Goldfinch, and many more.

Whether chasing rarities, marveling at vibrant migrants, or soaking in Arizona's spectacular scenery, our expertly guided tours promise unforgettable birding adventures in every season.
