Peru is the second most biodiverse country in the world for birds (after Colombia), with an impressive list of more than 1,800 species. It offers an astonishing diversity of habitats and species that make it one of the world's premier destinations for birding. Our Field Guides tours immerse you in the heart of this biodiversity, from lush Amazonian lowlands and cloud-draped Andean slopes to the legendary ruins of Machu Picchu, and our numerous itineraries hit all of the most important areas. Peru Overview & Highlights
Our Mountains of Manu, Peru tour explores one of the richest ecosystems on Earth, traversing golden puna grasslands, montane cloudforest, and endless lowland rainforest. We bird along one of the "birdiest" roads in the world, seeking flagship species like Lyre-tailed Nightjar, Red-and-white Antpitta, Andean Cock-of-the-rock, White-collared Jay, and Golden Tanager among an expected list of more than 400 species.
Two of our itineraries explore the northern reaches of the country. Our 20-day Northern Peru: Endemics Galore traverses the myriad of mountains and valleys as well as the Pacific littoral, with a huge list--nearly 40 hummingbirds, 60 tanagers, including three of the five endemic inca-finches, and a swath of country endemics ranging from the large White-winged Guan to the diminutive Coppery Metaltail. The shorter, 13-day Peru's Magnetic North: Spatuletails, Owlet Lodge & More focuses on northern Peru and its long list of endemics and rarities, including Marvelous Spatuletail, Long-whiskered Owlet, Royal Sunangel, Johnson's (or Lulu's) Tody-Tyrant, and many more.
We visit the Peruvian Amazon in two distinct regions, the country's northeast on our Iquitos, Peru: Canopy Walkways & Ancient Forests itinerary, and in the southeast on our Peruvian Rainforests of the Tambopata: Macaw Lick Extraordinaire tour; each offers particular highlights, the first with the ACTS canopy walkway, white-sand forests, and river islands near Iquitos, the second with the world's largest macaw lick, its own canopy walkways, and the bird-rich and mammal-rich wilderness of the Tambopata National Reserve.
The Field Guides Machu Picchu & Abra Malaga, Peru tour will take you not only to the famed Inca ruins (whose environs offer Andean Cock-of-the-rock, Inca Wren, and other great birding in additional to the amazing archaeology) but also to the "dry" and "wet" slopes of the pass at Abra Malaga (White-tufted Sunbeam, Marcapata Spinetail, Parodi's Hemispingus), offering access to a dazzling array of birds limited to just this part of southern Peru or adjacent Bolivia.
With our expert guides, good lodging in prime birding locations, and the opportunity to see hundreds of birds, including many endemics, why not join us?
