Colombia Overview & Highlights

On our Colombia's Marvelous Magdalena Valley tour we explore the legendary Magdalena Valley, where rare and endangered species such as White-mantled Barbet, Beautiful Woodpecker, Sooty Ant-Tanager, and the spectacle of hundreds of Oilbirds emerging from caves await. The Cerulean Warbler Reserve is also a highlight, hosting Niceforo's Wren, Parker's Antbird, and, yes, Cerulean Warblers!

We split the Cauca Valley into two tours for better coverage. In the south, on our Colombia's Cloudforests: The Western & Central Andes itinerary, we visit such famed sites as Cerro Montezuma and Rio Blanco. Birders can marvel at a rich assortment of montane hummingbirds (with more than 40 species on this tour), tanagers, antpittas, and such elusive endemics and specialties as Buffy Helmetcrest, Golden-plumed Parakeet, Gold-ringed Tanager, and Black Solitaire.

Moving north in the Cauca, the Colombia's Central Andes: The Wild, Wonderful North tour radiates out from the city of Medellin to Las Tangaras and the Chestnut-capped Piha Reserve for a long list of specialties from Munchique Wood-Wren and Black-and-gold Tanager to Red-bellied Grackle and Chestnut Wood-Quail.

Our trip to Colombia's Eastern Cordillera is an endemic-filled week visiting parks and reserves encircling the capital area of Bogota (including Chingaza, Chincaque, and Sumapaz national parks) and taking us from paramo and elfin habitats to montane and foothill forests; the numerous highlights include Apolinar's Wren, Blue-throated Starfrontlet, Turquoise Dacnis, and Golden-fronted Whitestart.

Or you can venture much farther east with us to the remote Inírida region on Colombia’s Inírida: Land of Many Waters, where the confluence of great rivers and white-sand forests yields specialties such as Yapacana Antbird, Azure-naped Jay, Capuchinbird, and a host of colorful cotingas and jacamars, plus encounters with indigenous cultures and the dramatic Mavecure hills.

Meanwhile, our Colombia's Santa Marta Mountains & Caribbean Coast trip visits one of the most endemic-rich regions in the world, with "Santa Marta" namesake species galore, as well as an added dose of dry-country specialties from the Guajira Peninsula.

Each of our Field Guides tours is crafted for both adventure and comfort, with expert guides leading you through Colombia’s most bird-rich and scenic regions. With every day promising new discoveries--endemic-rich forests, vibrant local culture, and unforgettable wildlife--Colombia offers a birding adventure like nowhere else in the world.
