Mexico Overview & Highlights
Mexico offers so many great destinations for birders that it may be hard to choose among them at first. A popular first stop for many is the hotspot of Oaxaca Valley, where you can seek more than twenty Mexican endemics including Red Warbler, Gray-breasted Woodpecker, Oaxaca Sparrow, and Sumichrast's Wren, while also experiencing vibrant Oaxaca City and Zapotec ruins. If you have a little more time, we also offer a second itinerary to this region that reaches beyond the Oaxaca Valley to do some birding on the adjacent Pacific and Caribbean slopes.
In Chiapas in the far south, we explore humid pine forests in search of Nava's Wren, the fantastic Rose-bellied Bunting, Pink-headed Warbler, Blue-throated Motmot, and Garnet-throated Hummingbird, as well as mangrove channels in search of Giant Wren, Yellow-naped Parrot, and Agami Heron. And along our route is spectacular Sumidero Canyon, not to be missed.
If you're up for a truly off-the-beaten-track adventure, join us on our El Triunfo trip to see Horned Guan, Resplendent Quetzal, Fulvous Owl, and other cloud forest specialties. Some great birding hikes and walks on this one, and as we stay at a base with cabins, there's no need for camping.
We venture to Veracruz along Mexico's Gulf Coast for the spectacle of the world's largest raptor migration--millions of hawks, kites, and vultures soaring overhead--plus numerous endemics and the chance to visit historic ruins.
Our trip to the Yucatan Peninsula is a long-running itinerary to a popular destination that features not only some alluring endemics, such as Mexican Sheartail, Yucatan Poorwill, and Gray-throated Chat, but also a chance to visit some of the classic Mayan archaeological sites, including Chichen Itza and Uxmal.
Our Central Mexico & Baja: Birds, Butterflies & Whales tour combines highland specialties like Sierra Madre Sparrow and White-naped Swift with the spectacle of wintering Monarch Butterflies. We then cross to Baja for its endemics and up-close encounters with Gray Whales.
For our Mexico's Eastern Sierras: Maroon-fronted Parrots & More itinerary, our newest Mexico offering, we traverse Hidalgo and San Luis Potosi in search of Red-crowned Amazon, Tamaulipas Pygmy-Owl, and Altamira Yellowthroat, and we end with Maroon-fronted Parrots at their nesting cliffs outside of Monterrey. Some spectacular scenery along this route, too!
From dazzling hummingbirds and trogons to secretive wrens and colorful buntings, Field Guides birding tours to Mexico promise a diverse experience, enriched by expert guides, warm hospitality, and the country's legendary cuisine and culture. Each journey reveals a new facet of Mexico's birdwatching and cultural wonders.

We offer many other tours to the CARIBBEAN, to CENTRAL AMERICA, and to SOUTH AMERICA, too!
