Info to help you choose an Amazon tour
The Amazon's dynamic river systems have fueled speciation, creating a patchwork of unique habitats where even small rivers have separated populations and fostered the evolution of new species. Whether we're scanning the canopy for macaws or following mixed-species flocks in the forest understory, our birding in the Amazon promises unforgettable encounters and a true immersion in the planet's richest avian ecosystem.
On Field Guides tours we explore the Amazon primarily on journeys originating in Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, with each itinerary focusing on a different regional avifauna and specialty bird list.
Several of our Brazil itineraries are based at least in part on wonderful river boats that enable us to bird remote areas otherwise inaccessible and afford the flexibility to explore pristine wilderness settings, all in great comfort. Examples are Brazil's Japura and Tefe Rivers and Rio Negro Paradise.
Many of the lodges or sites we visit feature canopy tree platforms or walkways that allow us close looks at birds that are difficult to see well from the forest floor. Two highlight itineraries for such experiences are Amazonian Ecuador: Sacha Lodge and Iquitos, Peru
Mineral licks are a fascinating phenomenon, attracting large numbers of parrots and macaws in particular. Two tours feature visits to very active licks: Peruvian Rainforests of the Tambopata and, again, Amazonian Ecuador: Sacha Lodge.
Two itineraries are largely Amazonian in flavor but also reach up into at least the foothills of the Andes: Bolivia's Lowland Lodges and Mountains of Manu.
And while Amazonian rainforest is the primary forest of many of these tours, some feature visits to the fabulous Pantanal, namely Jaguar Spotting in Brazil and Alta Floresta & the Northern Pantanal, Brazil.
All of these destinations offer exciting birding and wildlife experiences, with sightings of primates and other large mammals a regular feature.
