Africa Overview & Highlights

In East Africa, we explore Kenya and Tanzania’s legendary landscapes--the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Great Rift Valley, and Kakamega Forest--where you'll encounter a dazzling array of birds: bustards, raptors, turacos, barbets, sunbirds, and weavers, alongside spectacular mammal viewing including elephants, lions, and cheetahs. The alkaline lakes of the Rift Valley can host a million flamingos, while acacia woodlands and highland forests are alive with songbirds and endemic species.

West Africa's Ghana is a hotspot for endemics, highlighted by the charismatic White-necked Rockfowl and Egyptian Plover, plus vibrant rainforest and savanna birdlife.

Uganda offers the chance to seek the iconic Shoebill, Albertine Rift endemics, and even trek for Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, all amid a tapestry of lakes, grasslands, and rainforests.

South Africa stands out for its remarkable endemism--more than 100 endemic and near-endemic species--set against the floral spectacle of the Cape's fynbos, the wild beauty of Kruger National Park, and the country's renowned wine culture. Expect encounters with sugarbirds, rockjumpers, bustards, cranes, and dazzling sunbirds, plus classic African mammals and vibrant wildflower displays.

Our Angola itinerary offers the chance to visit a part of Africa and its birdlife seldom seen by birders, while our Namibia & Botswana tour includes visits to the spectacular birding and wildlife experiences of the Okavango Delta, famed Etosha National Park, and the incredible dunes of the Sossusvlei.

Our tour to Madagascar lets your experience the unique bird life and flora of this island nation, where 90 percent of the wildlife is endemic, including five families of birds and of course the charismatic lemurs.

Elsewhere, a trip with Field Guides to Morocco will bring you into contact with endemic, rare, and specialty birds from the coast to the Atlas Mountains, including Eleonora’s Falcon, Levaillant’s Woodpecker, and the endangered Waldrapp (Northern Bald Ibis).

With fantastic variety to choose from, Africa promises unforgettable birding and wildlife adventures no matter which Field Guides tour you choose.
